I grew up my whole life as a Saints fan. I would go to as many games as I could with friends or family or anyone who would take me! I remember watching games on TV with my Dad after church on Sundays and I would ask why the fans had paper bags on their heads. (We can talk about that in another blog!) It was so bittersweet watching the Saints beat the Vikings last night to go to their first Super Bowl in the teams history. It is hard to imagine what this city was like 4 years ago after Hurricane Katrina. People lost everything, and the next year when the Saints had their playoff run it was unbelievable how much life was pumped into the city and this state. It was so awesome to see the Academy parking lots filled with people getting their Saints Super Bowl gear last night. I know this is going to be an awesome next 2 weeks leading up to the game.
They have a great group of guys who seem to get along and really play as a TEAM. I'm going to enjoy every moment of the next two weeks!
Here are a few quotes from after the game last night.
"It's unbelievable. I think you can draw so many parallels between our team and our city, but in reality we kind of leaned on each other in order to survive and in order to get to where we are now." -Drew Brees
"It's been one step at a time. It hasn't always been easy. We've had to fight through plenty of adversity just like this city has." -Drew Brees
"We know what it's meant thus far to this community, not only the regular season, but also being able to host two playoffs games, what it did for this economy and what it did for the spirit of this city and these people." -Drew Brees
“This is for everybody in this city who’s had homes (that) used to be wet,” Saints head coach Sean Payton said. “This is for the city of New Orleans.”
“It’s hard (to explain),” Payton said. “Four years ago, there were holes in this roof (after Hurricane Katrina). The fans in this city and this region deserve it. Like I said before, I’m just proud to be a part of it … to be part of something that is so special for this city. It’s well-deserved.”
