THOUGHTS FROM COACH MEYER

As I'm sure most of you saw, Coach Don Meyer is going to be retiring from coaching at the end of the season. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4934150

Here are some thoughts from Coach Meyer on different things.

Defensively: ‘Talk your Position’

Talk, Anticipate, Technique

Stance- get in a mental stance

Vision- A great player knows where everyone is on the floor, a superior player knows where everyone is & what they are going to do.

Meyer- “Positioning, Anticipation, & Technique lead to quickness. Therefore, you can always get quicker”

*4 on 4 w/ towels- your feet put your hands in a position to be used as weapons

Meyer- “Sometimes, players just need to figure it out themselves”

Rotating on Defense:
1. Anticipate quick rotations
2. Help the Helper
3. Go where your help came from

*A break away lay-up is the best time to press

Ideas to start from if doing 3 possession scrimmage
1. Loose Ball
2. BOB & SOB
3. Saving the Ball
4. Jump Ball

“Replicate game situations in practice” – Joe Paterno

6

*See the big picture before you put parts together
Ex: A jigsaw puzzle

*Without a goal, discipline is punishment. LET THEM SEE MARCH!!

*Make the practices like games & the games like practices

*In the backcourt, make ballhandler dribble with his weak hand & keep him to that side

*INSTANT REPLAY CORRECTION
“Do it right this time”
- If player makes mistake, let them see what they did and replay the possession (dummy the possession)

Northern St. stretches after practice, it allows them to:
1. Stretch
2. Wind down- calm down
3. Talk calmly
