RENTING VS OWNING YOUR PERFORMANCE

Last night our women's golf coach here at McNeese, Coach Mike Flutie, gave a great talk to all of the student-athletes about some issues in sports psychology. Coach Flutie used to teach a sports psychology class at his last university and has tons of good information to share. I'm going to post some notes from the lecture over the next couple of days.

Leadership--> The process of influencing team members to work hard towards, and be committed to, team goals.
2 Types of Leaders
1.) Task-Oriented Leader- concerned with training, instructing behavior and performance, and winning.
2.) Person-Oriented Leader- concerned with interpersonal relationships on the team
Great Leaders
-Are both task and people-oriented but lean more towards being task-oriented.
-Are often scholars in their field and are intelligent.
-Make decisions based on facts and apply common sense/simplicity to complex issues.
-Highly driven and intrinsically motivated.
-Are willing to take calculated risk.
-Master in the art of communication.
Renting vs. Owning
-Renters are not invested
-Renters are not interested in improvement
-Renters will even consciously destroy
-Owners are invested
-Owners nurture and improve
Athletes Who Rent Performance
-Put in a minimum amount of time.
-Act as part of the team rather than a contributor.
-Are just present for the scholarship.
-Not vested in self or team.
Example: You feel anger over a clash with a teammate or coach....so you do the minimum.
-By doing this you give up ownership of your performance and hand it over to the coach.
-You see the situation in a negative way and choose not to give all of your mind/body.
-This is a very tough place for an athlete to be.
Athletes Who Own Performance
-Invested in self, team, and success in general.
-Take ownership and responsibility even in challenging circumstances.
-You may be required to take ownership within boundaries of the team/coach.
Ownership is Always a Choices
-Ownership creates greater rewards.
-The decision to own is always the right one.
-Ownership always leads to success!
